How to Split Subtitle Files - Complete Guide to CD1/CD2 Splits & Episode Separation
How to Split Subtitle Files - Complete Guide
Introduction
Sometimes you need to divide a subtitle file into two separate parts. Whether you're splitting a movie subtitle for CD1/CD2 discs, separating concatenated episode subtitles, or trimming subtitles to match a clip, a subtitle splitter makes this task effortless.
When Do You Need to Split Subtitles?
CD1/CD2 Disc Splits
Older movie releases often came on two discs. If you have a single subtitle file for the full movie but two video files, you need to split the subtitles at the disc-change point.
Episode Separation
Sometimes subtitle files cover multiple episodes joined together. Splitting lets you create individual subtitle files for each episode.
Clip Extraction
When extracting a segment of a video, you need the matching portion of the subtitle file.
File Size Management
Very large subtitle files (e.g., for long broadcasts) may need to be split for compatibility with certain players.
Two Ways to Split
Split by Timestamp
Enter a specific time (e.g., 01:00:00,000) and all subtitles before that time go to Part 1, while the rest go to Part 2. This is ideal when you know the exact point where the video is divided.
Split by Subtitle Number
Enter a subtitle entry number (e.g., 250) and the file splits after that entry. This is useful when you know the exact subtitle where the break occurs.
Timing Reset for Part 2
When to Enable
Enable timing reset when each video file starts at 00:00:00. This is the case for:
- CD1/CD2 splits where each disc starts at zero
- Separate episode files
- Individual clip files
When to Disable
Disable timing reset when Part 2 will be used with the same continuous video file, just covering a later section.
Step-by-Step Guide
- Upload your subtitle file (SRT, VTT, or other format)
- Choose split mode: by timestamp or by subtitle number
- Enter the split point: a time like 01:00:00,000 or a number like 250
- Configure timing: enable timing reset if Part 2 video starts at zero
- Preview both parts side by side
- Download each part as a separate file
Tips for Accurate Splitting
- Check the split point: Make sure no subtitle spans across the split point (one that starts before and ends after)
- Verify timing: After splitting, check that the first subtitle of Part 2 matches the video
