Frequently Asked Questions
Why do line breaks matter in subtitles?
Poor line breaks hurt readability. Lines that are too long get cut off on smaller screens. Breaks in the middle of words or phrases force the eye to jump awkwardly. Well-placed breaks at natural pauses improve comprehension and viewing comfort.
What is line balancing?
Line balancing means making both lines of a two-line subtitle roughly the same length. Instead of a very long line followed by a short one, you get two balanced lines. This looks better on screen and is easier to read.
What character limit should I use?
Netflix: 42 characters per line. Broadcast TV: 37 characters. YouTube: up to 47 characters. When in doubt, 42 is a safe default that works across most platforms.
What are natural break points?
Natural break points are positions in the text where a pause occurs naturally: after sentence-ending punctuation (. ! ?), after commas and semicolons, before conjunctions (and, or, but), and after prepositions. Breaking at these points preserves the natural reading flow.
